About
Our Story: The Urban Collective Boutique Hotel in Edwardsville, IL
Established in 2023, Urban Collective Boutique Hotel brings a fresh, elevated lodging experience to Downtown Edwardsville, Illinois. Designed for travelers seeking something more personal and memorable than a traditional hotel stay, our boutique property features eight uniquely designed suites, each offering its own atmosphere, color palette, theme, and curated décor. Every room is intentionally crafted to provide guests with an unforgettable stay in one of Illinois’ most historic cities.
A Historic Building Reimagined
Our hotel is proudly housed in the McCorkle Building, a landmark constructed in 1887 by Samuel S. McCorkle and his wife Mary. At the time, the structure was celebrated for its remarkable iron and glass storefront, crafted by the renowned Pullis Brothers of St. Louis. Making it a standout architectural feature in Edwardsville.
Over the decades, the McCorkle Building has been home to many beloved local businesses, including:
• Charles Hack Grocer in the south storefront
• Heisel Harness and Saddle in the north storefront
• Stahlhut and Hardbeck Grocers through the mid-1930s
• A sheet metal company
• A rug-cleaning service
• A taxi company
• And most notably, Buhrmester Paint & Wallpaper, which occupied the building for generations starting in 1948
What began as office spaces on the second floor eventually shifted into residential apartments as downtown evolved. By the time the hotel project began, the upper floors sat vacant, an opportunity waiting to be transformed.
A New Chapter for Downtown Edwardsville
In 2022, following the closure of Buhrmesters, the building was purchased by Hannah Fink and Kristen Pfund, owners of the upscale event venue The Ink House, located next door. Recognizing the need for stylish, high-quality lodging in the area, especially for wedding guests, Route 66 travelers, SIUE visitors, and weekend explorers, they set out to thoughtfully restore this architectural gem.
Their vision was clear:
Preserve the historic character of the McCorkle Building while introducing a modern, boutique hotel experience to Downtown Edwardsville.
Urban Collective Boutique Hotel was born from this passion for design, hospitality, and community.
